Choosing an SPC wear layer for the traffic class
The wear layer, not the total board thickness, decides how an SPC floor ages. What the 0.2, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 mm gauges are actually for.
The most common specification mistake we see on incoming enquiries is a buyer asking for “6 mm SPC” and saying nothing about the wear layer. Total thickness is a rigidity and acoustics decision. The wear layer is the one that determines whether the floor still looks acceptable in year eight.
What the wear layer actually is
It is the transparent layer above the printed decor film and below the UV coating. It carries no pattern of its own. Everything that scratches, scuffs or abrades a floor is abrading this layer, and once it is worn through, the decor film goes with it — which is why a worn SPC floor shows as pale patches rather than as dulling.
We run four gauges: 0.2, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 mm.
Matching the gauge to the traffic

The step that matters most is 0.3 to 0.5. Below 0.5 mm, a floor put into a commercial setting with grit-carrying foot traffic will show wear paths at entrances and lift lobbies within a few years. Above 0.5 mm, the failure mode usually stops being abrasion and becomes indentation or joint damage instead — different problems, solved by core thickness and by the click profile.
What it does not fix
A thicker wear layer will not compensate for:
- No entrance matting. Grit tracked in from outside does more damage than any amount of ordinary foot traffic. Specify barrier matting at every external door and you can often drop a gauge.
- A subfloor that is out of tolerance. SPC’s rigid core bridges minor imperfections, but a wavy screed produces point loading, and point loading damages joints, not surfaces.
- Castor chairs without pads. Hard castors concentrate load into a very small contact patch. This is an indentation problem.
