SPC or laminate in a tropical climate

Why HDF laminate and SPC rigid core behave differently at 85% relative humidity, and where each one is the right specification for Southeast Asian projects.

We make both, and we will quote either. The honest answer is that they fail in different ways, and the deciding factor in Southeast Asia is almost always what happens to the board when the air is wet.

The core is the whole argument

A laminate board is high-density fibreboard: wood fibre and resin, pressed. Its published density runs 830–880 kg/m³ for HDF, and it is specified with a thickness-swelling limit because that is the property that matters — fibreboard takes on moisture and grows.

An SPC board has no wood in the core at all. It is a stone-plastic composite: PVC resin and limestone filler. There is nothing in it for water to swell.

That single difference drives everything below.

Where SPC wins

Anywhere water reaches the floor. Bathrooms, kitchens, balconies, ground floors that flood in monsoon season, and any space that is not continuously air-conditioned. An SPC board that gets standing water on it can be mopped dry. A laminate board in the same situation swells at the joints and the swelling is not reversible.

High-humidity commercial. Hotel lobbies with doors open to the street, resort walkways, retail with poor humidity control. SPC also carries a Bfl-s1 reaction-to-fire classification and is self-extinguishing, which matters for public buildings.

Underfloor heating. Rare in the tropics, common in the export markets we also serve — SPC’s low thermal expansion suits it.

Where laminate still wins

Price per m², in dry conditioned space. For an air-conditioned office fitout or a residential project where the floor will never see standing water, laminate is the cheaper specification and it will perform.

Surface realism at the top end. A deep-embossed HDF laminate with an embossed-in-register surface still reads more convincingly as timber, close up, than most vinyl decors. If the project is being judged on how the floor looks from a metre away and the environment is controlled, that is a real argument.

The specification that goes wrong

The pattern we see repeatedly: laminate specified for a whole hotel or apartment block on price, including the bathrooms and the balconies, because the specification did not distinguish between wet and dry areas. Two years later the wet-area boards are cupped and the client blames the product.

Split the specification by area. Laminate in the conditioned dry rooms, SPC in everything that gets wet or sees outside air. Decors can be matched closely enough across the two that the transition is not obvious, and we can supply colour-matched trim for both.
